First used in Europe in 1882, vacuum sewers were not introduced to the U.S. until the late 1960’s. At that time, AIRVAC was one of the early pioneers in the technology. The other companies soon vanished, leaving AIRVAC to spearhead the effort to develop and improve the technology.

Our first U.S. municipal vacuum sewer system was installed in St. Michael’s, MD in the early 70’s. Early systems typically were small and mainly served rural areas. As could be expected, there were growing pains associated with some of these early systems. The wealth of knowledge gained from this experience has proven to be invaluable from a technical standpoint. More importantly, the determination to continually improve this “new technology” created a company culture of “customer first” which still exists today in a staff that is loyal, experienced and passionate. Many of our key members have been with AIRVAC for more than 25 years…and some even longer.

Nearly 40 years later, AIRVAC continues to lead the way. Our systems have been placed into operation all around the world. There are more than 700 operating AIRVAC vacuum sewer systems worldwide, including nearly 250 systems in 27 states in the United States.
