In 1999, Costruzioni Dondi (Rovigo, Italy) constructed the second vacuum sewer system in Venice, Italy. The SS. Giovanni E Paolo Hospital project has 53 - 3" AIRVAC valves. Initially, an attempt was made to install gravity sewers in this area, but construction was halted after difficulties were encountered installing about 1,500' (500 m) of gravity line.
Another project, the G. B. Giustinian project, began operation in 1997 and was the first vacuum sewer system in Venice. G. B. Giustinian has 22 AIRVAC 3" valves.
Costruzioni Dondi has demonstrated that vacuum sewers are the only viable method of sewering the City of Venice.
